Ableton Live Training

I am an Ableton Live Certified Trainer, which means I had to demonstrate my thorough knowledge of the program directly to Ableton’s lead trainers.  I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others.  Having taught audio production for a decade, I not only understand complex audio topics, but I can explain them to you in a simple, straightforward way that you can understand.

Online Webinars

Periodically I offer online webinar courses, and they have been extremely successful. This is a great (and economical) way to learn what I have to offer in a condensed, intensive fashion.  In addition to vast amounts of downloadable video content and accompanying Live Sets so you can follow along, every webinar includes multiple online conference Q&A sessions with me where we can talk in depth about the course material. Please join my mailing list for updates about upcoming webinars.

Group Workshops

I periodically will present group workshop trainings, mostly in the Seattle area, which offer the most affordable way to learn Live in an intensive weekend of class time.  I send out the invitation to my email list first, so get on my mailing list if you would like to stay informed about these events.  Past topics have included Introduction to Live, Sound Design with Live, Mixing and Mastering with Live, and more.  If you have a topic you think a group of people would like to learn about in a class setting, let me know!

Virtual training via Skype

Because scheduling time with me in Seattle can be challenging, I also offer one-on-one trainings via Skype for $50/hour.  Skype allows me to see your screen, and vice-versa, as needed.  You will also be able to hear the output of my Live Set directly over Skype as clear as if it were on your own computer, so if you send me your Live Set, I can help you work on it remotely.  These virtual trainings are easy to schedule and execute, hence the reduced price.  You will need:

  • A stable broadband connection.
  • A computer with a built-in or external microphone, and fast enough to handle a realtime Skype call.
  • The Skype application (and call) are free.
  • You do not need a webcam – we will be screen-sharing, so no video is required – just voice.
  • A Dropbox account (free) is the simplest way to share Live Sets and samples in real-time, but it is not required.
Some uses of Skype training could include:
  • Learning a new aspect of the program in real-time.
  • Helping you with a mix or arrangement of a song you are working on.
  • Helping you refine your synthesis / sound design skills.
  • Getting set up to DJ with Live.
  • Etc.

Jake Specifics:

  • I am comfortable teaching all aspects of the standard version of Live.
  • I am comfortable working with any experience level, from complete beginner to seasoned superstar.
  • I know (or can quickly figure out) nearly any feature of the Live Suite Instrument Devices.
  • I personally own a good smattering of third-party instruments and plugins which I can discuss with you.
  • I have a strong background in computers, digital audio, MIDI, controllers, synthesis, sampling, recording, mixing, remixing and mastering, so all of those aspects are available in addition to my Ableton Live skills.
  • I understand techniques for creating just about any genre of electronic-based music.
  • I can show you techniques for DJing, performing live, producing new tracks, remixing, or sound designing with Ableton Live.
  • I have used both Mac and Windows OS machines.  Currently I use Mac.
  • I do not yet have a firm understanding of creating new Max for Live devices, nor do I use The Bridge, so I do not teach those.
  • I can mix or master tracks for you for an additional fee.
  • 100% satisfaction: If you are not completely satisfied with your training time with me, I am happy to refund your money.

I am also co-coordinator of the Seattle Live User’s Group (SLUG), and have presented there as well.  If you are in the Seattle area, I suggest you join our Facebook Group and come to our meetings.

Questions?  Concerns?  Scheduling?  Drop me a note.

Are you asking about installing Live? Should be a snap. I’ve never used a CD: I always download the apps from their site – cheaper, faster, less waste.
